Who can participate?

Immigrant youth who: 

  • Are clients of JIAS Toronto (if you are not a client, please contact intake at 416-630-6481)
  • Arrived in Canada on January 1, 2025 or later; recommendation from your JIAS Toronto Settlement worker is also accepted
  • Are entering Grades 4-12 in September 2025
  • Want to improve their English skills
  • Would like to prepare for the upcoming school year
What: This is a two-week program for newcomer school-aged children that is meant to introduce them to the Ontario School System. Students will become familiar with a typical school day routine and English terms associated with school and learning. This is a great opportunity for newcomer children to practice their language skills and socialize with others.

Where: JIAS York Region LINC School: 1520 Steeles Avenue West, Concord, ON, L4K 3B9


When: Monday, August 11th, 2025 - Friday, August 22nd, 2025 (9:00 am - 3:30 pm)
Drop off is between 8:45 am - 9:00 am. Ready for School is for Monday-Friday only.


There is a mandatory orientation to the program on the evening of Thursday, August 7th (pizza dinner for parents and children included). All parents and students are asked to attend. 

  • Students will have the opportunity to meet their teachers and students that will be in their class
  • Parents will have the opportunity to review the program, guidelines, and policies

Registration is MANDATORY.

  • Please complete this form for the child(ren) that you would like to register for the Ready for School Program.
  • You must also send us a copy of your child(ren)'s OHIP card(s) (or alternative health insurance policy) to christophern@jiastoronto.org

The Ready For School program is only available for JIAS Toronto clients. If you and your children are not currently clients of JIAS Toronto, please call intake at 416-630-6481 or send an email to intake@jiastoronto.org to become a client before signing up for Ready For School.

Note Regarding Pick-Up and Drop-off 

  • If your child(ren) will be dropped off or picked up by anyone else not listed above, you must send a note to the school.
  • All adults dropping off or picking up children must sign in and out every day.

Code of Conduct


It is important to maintain an atmosphere of consideration, respect, good manners, self-discipline, trust, and cooperation. It is expected that all participants in the Ready-For-School program will: 

  • Come to the Ready-For-School program prepared to work and learn. Participants should bring with them all supplies provided to them by the teachers. 
  • Speak respectfully with each other and with the tutors at all times. 
  • Treat all space and property at the JIAS Toronto LINC ESL School – York Region site (including classrooms, bathrooms, all furniture and any other space participants have access to) respectfully and leave it in the same condition in which they found it.
  • Use computers only with the express permission of the teacher to work on program assignments. 
  • Not use electronics during the Ready-For-School program such as iPods or tablets. Cell phones should not be used during the day except to call parents to confirm travel arrangements or for emergency purposes. Except for absolute emergencies, cell phones may only be used during breaks or before/after the school day.

Where a participant is found to be disruptive to the learning environment, the participant will be asked to leave the Ready-For-School program for the remainder of the session. Some examples include: 

  • A participant behaving in a manner which interferes with the ability of other participants to learn or with the ability of the teachers to coach and provide assistance to all participants. 
  • A participant acting in a manner which physically or emotionally endangers him/herself or another person. This includes all forms of teasing, bullying, or use of inappropriate language. This also includes hitting, kicking, or other inappropriate physical contact. 
  • A participant using the computers for any other purpose than those listed above. In particular, accessing offensive, restricted, or otherwise inappropriate websites, and/or sending or posting offensive e-mails or text messages will not be tolerated. 
  • A participant who writes graffiti or in any other way vandalizes or damages any property. In addition, the student’s family will be held responsible for the cost of any needed repairs.
